Abdelrahman is new to our class and not only did he get the highest score this week and last of all the second graders, he beat ll but five third graders. Great job A.R.

Here are you spelling test words for the week. We are beginning with short vowel sounds so you can pick up, not only on vocabulary but pronunciation of words too.

Yesterday we did an exercise, making what questions in the past, present and simple tense. Although a lot of you confused the different tenses (you shouldn't!), I was very happy with the exercise. You nedd to work and think faster and I hope this will improve in the coming weeks.

We will do be doing a lot of reading, and yesterdays phonics story was just the beginning. The ability to identify sounds is vital for when you talk.

You are all doing very nicely with the adverbs. It is a difficult part of speech, and I am very happy that you are catching on so quickly. We just learned about comparative adverbs and in the coming week we will learn about superlative adverbs. Yes there are many ways to use adverbs! :)

For those of you who were on the 1.5 book, we will begin the 1.6 reading book. There will be many more cool stories to read. Reading is such fun! We can learn so many things from it, and I encourage you all to start reading at least 1 book a week. You can start with easy readers and as you progress you can move on to books with more pages and more words. You will see how great it is!

Hi 4B!

Most of you did really well on the spelling test, but some of you not so well.
These are frequently used words so at this stage I hope for you to get better scores on it.

I really enjoyed reading the story about the astronaut who goes to space. You were all very interested in the subject and I was very impressed with the questions you asked.
The new 2.1 book has many interesting stories, so I look forward to the good discussions we will have about them.

3A this week

It's another week 3A, and another week full of English! Doing your homework is very important, as is making sure that you come prepared to school. That means, that you need to make sure that you bring your folder with all the worksheets I have given you, inside neatly. You also have to bring a pencil!!!!!!!

So we started learning about adverbs last week, and this week we were introduced to comparative adverbs. Doesn't that sound familiar??? Yes it is! Very recently we learned about comparative ADJECTIVES. How is that the same to comparative adverbs. Well both comparative adverbs and comparative adjectives are comparing something. Remember adverbs are formed from adjectives!!!!
Eg. Slow is an adjective. To make it a comparative we add er: slower. To make it an adverb we add ly: slowly. To make slow a comparative adverb we add more: more slowly.

1. Adjective: The slow boy walks outside.
2.Comparative adjective: The boy is slower than the girl.
3. Adverb: The boy walks slowly.
4. Comparative adverb: The boy walks more slowly than the girl.

Due to a printing error I could not give out the usual spelling list, but students have copied it from the white board. I hope the problem can be rectified.

Today for Science we read the book The very hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carlisle, as an introduction to our new lesson on the life cycle of a butterfly. Hope you enjoyed listening to it as much as I enjoyed reading it!

New 4th grade

The 4th grade has been restructured and has been divided into 3 classes.
From this week I have been begun teaching what is known as "4B".
I have kept a few of my former students; namely Tareq, Adam, Sadeen, Qamar, Ibrahim, and Nour. I have also gained some new students from what was the old 4B, and these students are; Islam, Zaina, Zakariya, Ahmed Hejawi, Miqdam, Maria, Ahmed Qureish.
Welcome to my class and I hope you enjoy the time here. If you behave you will be rewarded and you will enjoy the class, but if you are bad in class, you will be punished. I do not accept students not doing their homework!!!!

Your spelling words for the week are high frequency words that you use often, and you have all promised to get full score. I hope you keep that promise.
We have been doing a lot of review this week so I could test the level the students are at, and what they have and have not learned.

We have started the new 2.1 books and the first story we are reading is "Iris and Walter". Its is about a young girl who moves to the country, but does not have any friends so is lonely and does not like it. But she meets a boy called Walter and they play all day and even though she misses the city, she begins to love and appreciate the country.

Students have been confused by the word COUNTRY.
There are two definitions:
1. An area of land with its own people and government. Eg. South Africa, Palestine, Jordan.
2. Land which is away from towns and cities. Country in this instance is the opposite of a city. Eg. Jenin

We are using the second definition in this story.

Your spelling test words for this week are very simple, but more important is that you can pronounce them properly. I hope that you will spend time at home repeating these words and their sounds... They are the building blocks for speaking English.

Students are having some difficuly rememebering the parts of speech. The parts of speech make up each sentence that we write and speak, so it is vital that students can identify it. I have been giving students exercises to ensure they can recognize each part, and I will continue to do so. To refresh...

Noun- A noun is an object, a place or a person. A NOUN IS NOT SOMETHING YOU CAN HIT!
eg Miss fatimah, house, garden, Nablus, jacket, Dead Sea etc.
Verb- A verb is a doing or action word. It tells what a person or animal or thing does. eg swim, eat, play, sing, skip, talk, laugh etc.
Pronoun- A pronoun is a word that can take the place of a noun.
eg I, you, he, she , it, they , we , us, them, your, me etc.
Adjective- An adjective is a word that tells us more about a noun. It can tell how something looks, tastes, feels, sounds, or . eg funny, blue, loud, strong, sweet, shiny etc

Eg Our fast cat ran to the garden.
Our is the pronoun.
Fast is the adjcetive.
Ran is the verb.
Garden is the noun.

We have begun learning about adverbs today, which is slightly more difficult then the other parts of speech we have learned

ADVERBS- They modify or tell us about a VERB or an ADJECTIVE. We use adverbs to tell us WHEN, HOW or WHERE an action (verb) takes place.
To make an adverb, we add ly to an adjective, NOTE: NOT ALL ADVERBS HAVE LY.
eg We never play in the rain.
Never is the adverb and it tells us WHEN we play in the rain.
eg The boy quickly runs to the store.
Quickly is the adverb and it tells us HOW the boy the runs.
eg The children play inside the house.
Inside is the adverb and it tells us WHERE the children play.

The homework today is a little challenging but it is important that you try to do it. Do not leave it blank and wait for me to give you the answers because then you won't learn anything :(

3A what day is it today?

Hi 3A!

Are you enjoying learning comparatives and superlatives?
All the exercise you do are to ensure you get the hang of it by continuously working on them. So don't complain about a lot of homwork ok :) It is for your benefit!
This week we were introduced to a different rule about comparatives and superlatives using the word more and most instead of adding er and est. This rule applies when you are using an adjective (a word that describes a noun) that is more than two syllables. For eg beautiful. The flower is more beautiful than the plant. The rose is the most beautiful flower. Remember:
More than is used for comaparatives and
The most is used for superlatives...

1.5 readers have been reading the story Lost! about a bear that gets lost in the city and a young boy helps him find his home. 2.1 students have been reading Duck, about the growing stages of a duck. Next week both groups will use 1.5 to read a story called The bravest cat. It is a great story about a brave mother cat who rescues her kittens from a building that's on fire.

4A and field trips

Last week we had late notice on a field trip that would take place on a Thursday 11th March, and so students were told on Tuesday that their weekly spelling test would take place on Wednesday. Some students were not prepared, and so the test was retaken on Sunday by those who wished to. 4A, the spelling words are not be memorised the night before so you have 20/20 on your test, but to be able to use those words in everyday speech and writing. I hope you can make an effort to start using them.

We have been focusing a lot on synonyms and antonyms these past few days, as they are vital to speaking and communicating effectively. Use these words, and your language skills will improve dramatically.

Superfudge readers have completed their book and soon Tales of a fourth grade nothing students will complete their books too. We are in the process of receiving more Judy Blume books, that I am sure you will love! In the meantime we will start some short stories, focusing on international culture and general knowledge.

Hi everybody...

Last week we started learning comparatives, which is a continuation from adjectives.
You all learned that we use comparitives to describe two objects or people.
Eg we can say that Miss Fatimah is taller than Mona. To make a comparative we add er to a word. This week we will be learning about superlatives. Superlatives are when we compare more than two objects or people. Eg Bana is the tallest in the class. To form a superlative we add est.

Our reading for this week will be Duck in the 2.1 book, and Lost in the 1.5 book.
Remember to write the definitions of your spelling test words and to complete the superlative worksheet I gave you.

Making Conversation 4A

Tomorrow is our spelling test with our Antonym words. Practice using these words often, it is very helpful when you are learning to speak. Yesterday we were introduced to Synonyms. While Antonyms are words with opposite meanings, Synonyms are words that are the same or similiar.
Arrive-depart are Antonyms.
Arrive-come are Synonyms.
Learning these words is important. try to iclude them in your everyday speech. You will improve tremendously :)

Learning and talking about each other is vital too. Yesterday we answered questions about ourselves. Today you swapped the information with your partner and told the rest of the class about your partners using the information written. We will continue building on this using more complex questions..

Yesterday we had two new students join our class from the 2nd Grade. Welcome Burkhan and Adam. I hope you enjoy being with 3A and that you find our class fun!!

Remember students that the spelling test is on Wednesday and not Thursday, because Thursday is a holiday. You need to start memorising the plural nouns and using them correctly...

This week we began to learn about adjectives! Adjectives are words that describe a noun, and they tell us how a noun looks, feels, tastes, sounds etc.
So if I have the noun chicken, the words that describe it could be, fat, yellow, yummy, loud.
There was a loud chicken outside my home. I ate a yummy chicken. The yellow chicken ran away. The fat chicken sat on the ground. All these words describe the chicken and tell us about the chicken.

Your homework today, is the parts of speech worksheet with nouns, adjectives and verbs. You also have to complete the questions for the story, Pet Pests.

Today we received our new spelling test words for the week. They are:
came, made, main, Friday, shape, tray, agree, meal, deal, time, kite, hold, told, phone.

Remeber you have to write the meanings for all the words for your homework.

Students continued answering questions on Baby Dinosaurs and on Tuesday we will start a new story. Group 1 and 2 will read Chompy's Afternoon, and Group 2 and 3 will read Eye Spy.

Last week we learned about regular plural nouns. e.g. pen = pens, apple = apples, couch = couches. Students learned that, for most plural nouns, we just add s or es. Those are called regular nouns. Tomorrow students will learn about irregular plural nouns.

Almost all of 3A did their homework from Thursday so I am very happy! :D

Did you have a good vacation 4A? Are you ready for this semester? I hope so!

This weeks spelling tests words are focusing on beginning and end sounds or blends.
These are dr, sc, ft, nk. These are the words:
Dry, dream, drink, score, soft, left, think, dragon, drum, scared,
scarf, gift, thank, bank, drop, scatter, sink, scampre, drum.
You also had to write the meanings for the words so that you don't only know how to spell them, but you know how to use them as well.

For the Superfudge and Tales of a fourth grade nothing readers, we have been writing chapter summaries. This is to ensure that you have understood what is important in each chapter!

Two reading groups will be going with Mr. Sean on Sundays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. They will be reading the Odyssey. In this time I will be with one group. We have started a short story called American pepper, about a family who receive a parcel from America. They don't know what it is and the letter explaining is in English which they can't read! Tomorrow we will continue with the story and start answering the questions. I had you write down the words that you did not understand and search for the meanings. I hope you did!

Our song for this month is called "Here in this diary", by The Ataris. We have a song competition next week, and the theme is Punk music. Please do not ask for Micheal Jackson, because he was not a punk singer!!!!!! We have to be really good and beat 4B and 5A and 5B. That means you have to practice, practice, practice at home!!!! :)

Are you all ready for this month? From this semester you wil be receiving more homework than before, so I hope nobody tells me they had too much Arabic homework :) English is very important too! Yesterday in 3A we received our new spelling words for the week. You also had to write the meanings of the words on the list I gave you. These are the words:

Camping, trip, overnight, trail, afraid, vacation, tent, lake, waterfall, began, backpack, water bottle, marshmallows and camera.

We are also learning a new song this month. The name of it is "Here in this diary", by The Ataris. It was one of my favourite songs when I was younger so I hope you like it too!

All 3 groups this week, will be reading the story Dinosaur babies. It is about the different types of dinosaurs and how they were looked after by their moms. We are also reading about how long ago dinosaurs lived, and what dinosaur hunters have found that tell us they did exist.

We also did an exercise on comparing, using opposites.

E.g The boy is small. The girl is big.

The rock is hard. The pillow is soft.

The Odyssey Starts Today

Every year the top fourth graders read a version of the Odyssey. This is one of the most famous stories ever. Last year some of our students read it in the Scientists, Journalists, Authors and Community Servants Class.

This year, the rest of S,J,A, and C.S. II will read it. Students will receive pages 1-2 tomorrow. The students who have already completed it will receive different reading work.

Tomorrow in class, we will continue working on logic puzzles, we will do a brief reading exercise, and most of the students will have handwriting homework. Only those students whose writing is superb will not have to do it.

As part of the logic puzzles students will learn the difference between odd numbers (1,3,5,7,9,11) and even numbers (2,4,6,8,10).

The past week has been busy for 4A. Students brought in the nests they made for Science. Thank you all for the effort you put into your nests, even if some were taken from trees :)

Students also wrote a story about a superpower they would like to have and what they would do with it. After I mentioned being invisible, most the students thought that would be a great super power to have so that they could spy on the teachers :) I hope not!!

They also wrote an essay about a trip they took. Students were encouraged to write in as much detail as possible about what they did, what they saw, what they ate and who they went with.

We have also been learning the term used to in the past tense. They used it to compare with the term now.
eg: I used to take the bus to school but now I walk by myself.

On the grammar worksheet most students did very well but unfortunately no one got a perfect score :( I hope next time everyone will be getting 20 sticker points....

3A in the past week

In the past week we have done a lot with 3A. Last thursday we wrote a story about a trip to the beach. What did we do at the beach? What did we eat? What did we wear? Everybody came up with great ideas! Then in Phonics we focused on our short vowel words. Some words can be confusing especially when they sound so alike! e.g. bet and bat.. Remember, with words like these, to listen very carefully and you will hear the difference in sounds.

Last week in Science we discovered all the different habitats that plants can live in. Not all plants are the same and they grow in different environments. The four main habitats we focused on were a wetland, a forest, a desert and a rainforest. We also found out that different parts of a plant help it adapt to its habitat. The shape and size of the parts are very interesting!

We are still continuously reviewing the subject pronouns.
I, you, she, he, they, we. Remember most sentences have to start with a subject pronoun!

Because Thursday is a public holiday, our spelling test will be on Wednesday. You all have your words in your notebooks so you should be able to study well.

In 3A today we practiced some Phonics with the short /e/ /o/ /i/ and /u/.
Than we moved on to Science! We are learning the important parts of the plants. We focused on two parts, the root and the stem and how they help the plant. Next we will learn about the flower and the leaves.

We wrote some sentences in the PAST TENSE in positive and negative. Example:
Positive: I studied for my English test.
Negative: I did not study for my English test.

I hope you will practice at home too!

Today both 3A and 4A learnt new class rules. We learnt that there are consequences for any action that WE CHOSE TO DO. There can be positive consequences when we are good and listen to a rule or there can be negative consequences when we disobey and break a rule.

Good = Postive =REWARDS
Bad= Negative = PENALTIES

Please remember... Penalties ARE NOT punishments....
They are just the result of when you CHOSE TO BREAK A RULE.

I hope i will only be giving out rewards :)

The day has arrived! Tomorrow will be the singing competition.. Since Ahmad has left we need to find someone to take his part and so Malak will. I know we can win so practice practice tonight! :) We dont want Mr Seans class to win right!

Spelling test

It is monday already just 1 more day and than it will be the spelling test for 3A!
I hope all of you are studying...

There have been problems with the Blog but now it is working and all the posts can go up.
From this week 4A will have a spelling test weekly.
The test will be on Sunday the 20th of December.
There will be 20 words to learn but i will only give you 15 in the test.

Dont worry they will be easy high frequency words that you already know.
